Unique Offerings at Café Porta Alba

We are excited to announce two additions to our menu:

Pizza Fritta is what we would say is a "traditional Naples classic." This pizza is also a "cult" Neapolitan street food! Pizza Fritta is so unique to Naples, that if you drove ½ hour outside the city in any direction you'd be hard-pressed to find it offered anywhere.

Pizza Fritta's base is our special Café Porta Alba pizza dough, folded and filled with delicious fresh ingredients. The stuffed pizza is then immersed in a hot oil bath.
There are two choices of fillings:

Pizza Fritta Parmacotto – filled with house made mozzarella, Italian ham, and Fontina cheese

Pizza Fritta Mozzarella – the meatless option with house made mozzarella, Parmigiano cheese, cherry tomatoes, and olives

Pizza Montanara is what we consider a "modern classic." This pizza is topped with oven-roasted tomato sauce and smoked buffalo mozzarella, and lightly flash fried and then cooked in the wood-burning oven. The double cooking adds a unique depth.
Pizza Montanara is found in places outside Naples, but is certainly difficult to find in this country. It is a very popular and "hot" menu item at the few top pizzerias in New York where it is offered!

More of the back story on these fabulous menu items:

Are you familiar with the 1954 film, L'Oro di Napoli (or "The Gold of Naples") with Sophia Loren? This Italian comedy is a true tribute to Naples. In the film, Loren portrays a Neapolitan pizza maker who makes these special Pizza Frittas!

The restaurant featured in the film is Pizzeria Starita a Materdei (a Neapolian pizzeria opened in 1901). This Pizzeria is the location where the Pizza Montanara was invented by Antonio Starita, a superstar in the world of Neapolitan pizza. Starita was the teacher of Roberto Caporuscio, who is the amazing chef who comes to Café Porta Alba from time to time for events and to work with our kitchen staff.
